VW electrifies the new Golf and launches five different hybrid versions of the new Golf – three mild hybrids and two plug-in hybrid models. With eTSI technology are two Golf eTSI, power 150 PS (110kW) and 110 PS (81 kW) are the first Volkswagen models with a mild hybrid 48V drive system, while a third is expected.
The VW new Golf hybrid versions operating in the 48 V save fuel up to 0.4 liters/100 km and offer excellent acceleration. With increased overall autonomy, with the two plug-in hybrid models achieve a total autonomy of 870 km. (Golf eHybrid) and 745 km. (Golf GTE). This achieves impressive fuel and energy savings of the two plug-in hybrid models, compared to the previous generation Golf.
With three new eTSI engines (48V mild hybrid – mild hybrid) and two new plug-in hybrid driving systems, in the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE, the new generation Golf becomes Volkswagen’s most electrified model range.
The new Golf 1.5 eTSI with a power of 150 PS (110 kW), with Volkswagen’s first mild hybrid 48 V (eTSI) engine system, was introduced as early as the launch of the model in the spring. Its smallest version, the Golf 1.0 eTSI with 110 PS (81 kW), complements the range. Both engines are equally efficient and powerful and thanks to the additional electric thrust they offer excellent acceleration performance.
The range of the new Golf is enriched with two new plug-in hybrid models: the Golf eHybrid and the Golf GTE. These Golfs are equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity that has increased by 50%, to 13 kWh, compared to the plug-in hybrid model of the previous generation Golf Mk7. The two plug-in hybrid models are powered either by the electric motor, or by a turbocharged TSI petrol engine or by both units together.

Golf eHybrid produces 204 PS (150 kW) power. This Golf has a consumption of only 11.0 kWh/100 km. Its electric autonomy is up to 80 km. The combined range reaches 870 km (all NEDC values). The Golf GTE produces 245 PS (180 kW) power – the combination of the electric motor and the TSI petrol engine therefore achieves the same level of power as the current Golf GTI! The Golf GTE can be powered by clean electricity with a range of up to 62 km, with an energy consumption of 12.4 kWh.
With the battery charged, the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE start electrically and therefore with zero local emissions. The choice by the driver of the E-MODE allows pure electric driving. The turbocharged TSI petrol engine is automatically activated at higher speeds – depending on the activated hybrid mode, driving profile, or battery charge level.
An additional mild 48V hybrid version is expected towards the end of the year. Also the 7-speed dual-clutch box (DSG) belongs to the basic equipment of the models.
