bZ4x: This is the first pure electric Toyota!

The new bZ4x is Toyota’s first pure electric car and follows in the footsteps of the original model that was revealed to us earlier this year, with changes in the exterior appearance being minimal.

Also, the Toyota bZ4x has another first, since it is based on the new platform that has been built exclusively for the brand’s electric cars, the e-TNGA, which has been developed in collaboration with Subaru.

The 71.4 kWh battery is mounted on the floor, forming part of the frame, with its maximum range exceeding 450 km (according to the WLTP protocol) while according to Toyota, the battery even after 10 years of use will retain 90% of its total capacity.

For this achievement, an important role is played by the water cooling of its cells, as well as the management of heat, which helps in the longevity of the battery, but also in the enhancement of range.

The new Toyota bZ4x will be offered with two engine variants. The first version will be front-wheel drive, powered by an electric motor with a power output of 204 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque. This performance will enable the bZ4x to complete acceleration up to 100 km/h from a standstill in 8.4 km/h, while the top speed reaches 160 km/h.

The next version will be 4-wheel drive, as an 80 kW (109 hp) electric motor is mounted on each axle, with a combined power of 217.5 horses and 336 Nm of torque. The process of 0-100 km / h requires 7.7 sec! In order for the 4-wheel drive system to perform even better, there is the XMode that offers drivers depending on the terrain that the driver wants to move.

Charging the battery on a 150 kW fast charger takes 30 minutes to reach 80%, while from Q4 2022 the bZ4x will also incorporate an on-board 11 kW charger. Also of interest are the steer-by-wire system that will be incorporated into European models at a later time, as well as the optional solar panels that can be mounted on the roof.

In terms of design, the production model is largely based on the original model, incorporating the “Hammerhead” design philosophy for the front of the car. It has thin and sharp luminaires, but also the intense angles that are formed. In terms of dimensions now, the Toyota bZ4x is a bit smaller than the RAV4.

More specifically, it is lower by 86 mm, while having smaller overhangs, but a longer wheelbase by 160 mm. This results from the possibility that the installation of electric motors gave to designers to create with greater freedom.

So the cabin is comfortable but also technologically advanced, as the driver has at his disposal a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a large screen for the infotainment system that receives over-the-air upgrades.

According to Toyota, the passenger compartments are ample, with the trunk reaching 452 liters. The European premiere of the all-electric Toyota bZX4 is set for December 2.
